MP3toMIDI

· music, Android

MP3toMIDI is a “proof of concept” idea I had where I wondered whether I could automate splitting stems from a real song and turning that into a decent MIDI file. So far the results are.. interesting, but nowhere near good. The files tend to be too busy to be enjoyable but the original song is usually recognisable.

The way it works now is the song is split into 6 stems using Demucs and then those stems are shoved through a pitch transcriptor/drum hit identifier - this is then fed into a MIDI parser and a baby is made!

This runs locally on your device without sending anything to a cloud server for processing. It will need to download a few models and a soundfont the first time you use it but after that will run totally offline. As your phone does all the processing it can take multiple minutes per song, a status window will keep you updated as to the overall progress.

Check out the latest version on github in my MP3toMIDI repository or in my F-Droid repo. I have linked the current (for today) version 1.0.0 apk and source here but there may be a newer version available there.
